Schiaparelli, A Glamorous Affair

The real star of the awards season

Awards season has begun, and keeping up with all the looks has become a full-time job. Do you know who has been doing their job this season? Schiaparelli and its Creative Director, Daniel Roseberry, whose custom Haute Couture gowns have had us clapping through our screens.

The Golden Globes

Natasha Lyonne wears a sculptural corset bodice fully covered in ecru glass bugle beads and tube fringes from the Spring 2022 Couture Collection, with a pointed neckline that perfectly frames Lyonne’s face. Her updo brings attention to a pair of oversized crystal-encrusted gold shell earrings, complemented nicely by gold nails reminiscent of Schiaparelli’s over-the-top gold nail accessory designs.

Carey Mulligan models a reinterpretation of an Elsa Schiaparelli original from 1949. Though more reserved, the gown is still quintessentially Schiaparelli: its ruching and cinched waist remind us of a spine, showcasing what is likely to be the designer’s foray into surrealist anatomical design; the touch of silver crystals along the neckline suggest a taste of what was to come for the Schiaparelli house in the years that followed.

For this Mermaid Barbie, Daniel Roseberry took Elsa Schiaparelli's skeleton gown and reimagined it in an apt, mermaid-style silhouette. Its velvet corset bodice is adorned with embroidered bones gilded in diamond and gold. The striking piece ends with a dramatic flourish, an umbrella skirt that surely had Dua Lipa wanting to “Dance The Night” away.

The devil’s in the details: golden brass bijoux straps interwoven with black satin, a thick velvet belt around the waist, a bold red lip, the iconic Schiaparelli Nose clutch. This gown from the 2023/24 Fall Ready-to-Wear collection is perfect in its subtlety. More importantly, it looks divine on Natalie Portman.

The Emmys

Natasha Lyonne graces yet another carpet in yet another Schiaparelli piece. At The Emmy Awards, the Poker Face star wore a long-sleeved metallic knit gown with trompe l'oeil breasts. It’s giving chill punk rocker in the best way.
