Barbie and Chanel

It just makes sense

The Barbie movie has scratched an itch in our brains. Staged against Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer's perfectly manicured sets, Greta Gerwig’s pink explosion has made a lasting impact on everyone who has watched the film. One itch that has been thoroughly scratched is Margot Robbie’s Barbie outfits, specifically her Chanel outfits. It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that Robbie wears quite a bit of Chanel in the film. As an ambassador for the prestigious brand, she has modeled Chanel just about everywhere on-screen and on the red carpet. Barbie was no different. A Chanel article reveals that Jacqueline Durran, the film’s costume designer, was “given a selection of outfits from the Ready-to-Wear, COCO BEACH and COCO NEIGE collections” to fill Barbie’s movie closet, complete with jewelry and bags—just like how we would receive our Barbies in their box as kids.

Aside from the outfits displayed in her closet, Robbie’s Barbie wore a lot of vintage Chanel. At the behest of Virginie Viard, Creative Director of Chanel, there were five outfits seen on the big screen: three skirt suits, a ski outfit (including Ken's), and a dress.

Stereotypical Barbie’s skirt suits

Given that Chanel is known for their iconic tweed skirt suits, this Barbie couldn’t go a whole movie without wearing at least one! In fact, Robbie sported three: two tweed skirt suits in shades of baby and hot pink and one in lavender plaid.

The baby pink tweed skirt suit and the lavender plaid skirt suit were first spotted on supermodel Claudia Schiffer during Chanel’s 1995 Spring/Summer campaign: baby pink for the runway presentation and lavender for the campaign. Margot Robbie has actually referred to Schiffer as the “original Barbie”, revealing in an interview that one of the archival pieces she wore even bore Claudia’s name on its label.

The hot pink tweed skirt suit also had its moment in the film. The matching hat, placed perfectly atop Robbie’s Barbie’s low side pony and paired with hot pink slingback Chanel heels, was just perfection.

The ski outfit (don’t forget Ken’s)

In a scene where Robbie’s Barbie visits Ryan’s Ken, she is seen wearing a pink Chanel dress with two of the most iconic pieces of wardrobe in the film: a Chanel heart-shaped quilted pink bag with the double C Chanel logo and a statement logo necklace featuring different coloured gemstones enclosed in diamonds with pearls strung around, with the costume department adding a large pink heart stone in the center.

Both pieces were also from the 90s, with the bag modeled in blue by Schiffer and the necklace seen down the runway in the 1995 spring/summer Chanel show on supermodel Shalom Harlow another reference to vintage Chanel.

There’s no doubt that Barbie and Chanel make a perfect match, marrying nostalgia with reinvention in a fittingly pretty pastel tribute to their storied legacies.
