She’s Everything. And He’s Ryan Gosling.

15 Times We Felt the Kenergy

By the time you’ve seen this, everyone and their Allan has seen the Barbie movie. I have, and as well as I know it was the Barbie movie…my favourite part had to be Ken.

Ryan Gosling delivered a genuine Oscar-contending performance as Barbie’s bleach blonde boytoy turned petty patriarchy pusher, and is rightfully receiving his flowers. It’s hard to believe that there was once a time when people raged against Gosling’s casting, protesting Greta Gerwig’s decision to cast man above the age of 30 as an archetypal heartthrob. In the time that has followed, however, it’s become abundantly clear why Gosling was cherry-picked: he was, in his own words, “born to play” Ken.

And, there’s only one thing he’s nailed better than his portrayal of the character: his promotion of the Barbie movie. Here are some of his Kennest moments on the Barbie press tour, in no particular order.

15. He started spreading the Kenergy long before the Barbie press cycle

A whole calendar year before the actual Barbie promotional tour, Gosling was putting in the Werq! And doing so in hilarious fashion. While doing press for The Gray Man, Gosling coined (kenned?) the now infamous term, “Kenergy”.

14. Kens Kenning All Over the Place

watch here: Entertainment Tonight [@etnow] Is Ryan Gosling the most unserious man alive, or just seriously in character as Ken in #Barbie?

In this now viral behind-the-scenes snippet filmed during production, Gosling—donning full Cowboy Ken garb—somehow manages to say an entire speech with basically only the word Ken. He sounds delirious by the end of it, and seems to think himself ridiculous; but he’s so into the bit, we can’t help but find it hilarious.

13. FR, What is Kenergy??

watch here: ExtraTV [@extra_tv] Here’s to hoping that the #BarbieMovie helps fund #RyanGosling’s further research into “Kenergy.” 🤣💓

When tasked by ExtraTV with “defin[ing] Kenergy”, Gosling declares that funding is needed to research it. Okay, academic??? And how indeed… Open up a Ken-stitute, perhaps? (I acknowledge that was a horrible pun, carry on.)

12. His Red Carpet Muse? Barbie.

…and of course a tribute to Thee Director Barbie, Greta Gerwig.

11. GQ’s…Ken Essentials?

watch here: GQ | KEN Things Ryan Gosling Can't Live Without | GQ

Not only does Gosling expertly slip a reference to the Coco Chanel rule (Before you leave the house, take one thing off) into this video, but he codifies his own fashion law: the Ken rule. Before you leave the house, put three things on. Which… yes, maximalist king!

10. Putting the Ken Rule to the Test

watch here: Naz Perez [@nazperezz] this greeting is my new alarm clock ⏰ also did RG just say “omg”!? Margot and Ryan are magic!

In following the Ken rule, Gosling offers a very well-dressed interviewer a few three things to add to her Barbie-inspired get-up.

9. Isn’t He in a Relationship with Eva Mendes?

So, tell me why he needed help saying “I love you” in Spanish to the crowd at the Mexico premiere… Perhaps the spirit of Ken possessed him again. Has his fake tanned, perma-waxed foot on Ryan Gosling’s throat!

8. Women’s World Cup Well Wishes

I’m sorry. Every time Ryan Gosling says “beach”, I lose it.

7. He Knows Barbie is for the Girls!

In an incredibly sweet gesture, Gosling brought his older sister, Mandy, to the Canadian premiere.

6. He Got the Jimin Stamp of Approval

watch here: Barbie Movie [@barbiethemovie] Had to give Jimin this for his KEN-RGY! (*previously recorded*)

Maybe this was pure happenstance; or, the Barbie costume department has a BTS stan among its ranks. Either way, marketing king! I just know the K-pop girlies ate this UP!

5. Putting the Ken in Kennel

watch here: BuzzFeed Celeb | Ryan Gosling & Margot Robbie: The Puppy Interview

When Ryan Gosling asked, “Should we intervene?” With a casual hand out, arm on his bent knee, vocal posture a perfect surfer’s bass… My life was changed forever. Side note: I would kill to be a puppy, being called “my dude” by Ryan Gosling.

4. A Man of the Barbies

watch here: Entertainment Weekly [@entertainment_weekly] #RyanGosling praises #AmericaFerrera’s work in #Barbie 🥹 #RyanGoslingEdit #MargotRobbie

Like a true Ken, Ryan Gosling champions all the Barbies in his life. During a panel held by Entertainment Weekly with the cast of Barbie, he surprised America Ferrera, the beating heart of the movie, with the revelation that he’d watched her TedTalk. Let me just pull up Youtube…

3. The Ken of the Running Bit

watch here: IGV Presents [@igvpresents] Ryan Gosling eats sleeps and breathes kenergy 😂

When asked to describe Ken’s perfect day, Gosling details that it would involve 1) Barbie dropping something, and 2) Ken picking it up and giving it to her. Although it’s a hilarious joke already, it becomes even funnier in another context…

watch here: ameliadimz [@ameliadimz] Found my Ken x

At the world premiere of Barbie, Amelia Dimoldenberg, host of Chicken Shop Date and one of the funniest people on the planet, quizzes Gosling on how one finds a Ken. His response? He proceeds to DESCRIBE KEN’S PERFECT DAY FROM BARBIE’S PERSPECTIVE. Narrative builder.

He’s Ken first, storyteller second.

2. Ken-timental

watch here: IMDb [@imdb] the ✨ memories ✨

The Barbie set was an enviable treasure trove of props. Hence why, when the Barbie cast was asked what they would’ve liked to steal from Barbie Land after wrapping, they had hundreds of things to choose from: a flamingo mailbox, a custom Chanel snowsuit, even the Barbie Corvette.

Gosling’s answer? “The memories.”

Kant, move aside. We have Ken-t now.

1. This One isn’t About Ken, it’s About Allan

watch here: The Associated Press [@apnews] AND NOW, YOUR MOMENTS OF KEN: Kate McKinnon and Michael Cera share their "Barbie" highlights.

This final moment belongs to the unsung hero of the male doll movement: Ken’s best friend, Allan. Or more accurately, Michael Cera. In an interview conducted by The Associated Press, Cera reveals that he was responsible for inserting a clever “Ken working” pun in the film. Not only is the man intelligent; but like Allan, he always finds a way to help Ken shine.
